“‘Our Festival, Our Pride” was the theme of the 20th Gai Jatra Pride Parade, which was conducted this year in Tundikhel and featured various artists and LGBTQIA+ performers.
Gai Jatra Pride Parade is an LGBTQ+ march aimed at acknowledging the diversity of the LGBTQ community, remembering those from the community who lost their lives, and demanding acceptance and equal rights. It has been conducted annually in Kathmandu by the Blue Diamond Society since 2002. The rally begins at Sanchay Kosh and travels around Basantapur, finally concluding with a program at Tundikhel.
The program retains the essence of Gai Jatra as it aims to commemorate those from the community who lost their lives due to mistreatment or natural causes.
Since a lot of stigma still exists for the lgbtq+ community, the community and their allies choose to participate in Gai Jatra processions, using the platform to express their identities, break down societal barriers, and foster understanding.
The festive and lighthearted atmosphere of Gai Jatra is utilized to challenge stereotypes and promote acceptance. Groups are dedicated to LGBTQ+ themes, showcasing love, tolerance, and unity messages. This is a creative way to raise awareness and encourage conversations about LGBTQ+ rights and visibility in Nepal. It also allows the community to demand proper rights and services in education, property, marriage, etc. while enjoying the festivities.
