ABiR Artisan Fest 2023: Where Nepali Tradition Meets Contemporary Excellence

KATHMANDU, OCT 01:ABiR Designers' Hub and the Federation of Nepal Cottage and Small Industries (FNCSI) are teaming up to host the ABiR Artisan Fest 2023 at Patan Museum for two days, from September

30th to October 1st. It was inaugurated today by the mayor of Lalitpur Metropolitan City, Chiribabu Maharjan

The program is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with free entry for all guests. It includes a diverse range of offerings, such as clothing, accessories, handcrafted jewelry, crochets/knitwear, and organic packaged food. It also includes live music, food stalls, games, and giveaways.

The festival featured many mesmerizing cultural fusion songs performed by Fusion Jatra, captivating the audience after 3:30 PM. The promise of even more enchanting performances by two diverse groups and a dance performance tomorrow ensures that the festival remains a hub of cultural celebration.

The choice of Patan Museum as the venue for the ABiR Artisan Fest was deliberate. This historic site seamlessly merges Nepal's rich culture and heritage with the craft of artisans. It offers visitors an opportunity to observe Nepali tradition while appreciating the craftsmanship of local creators.

What sets this festival apart is the explosive support it has received from various tourists. Many tourists visited the event to not only marvel at the array of products on display but also to purchase unique souvenirs that carry the essence of Nepali culture. The festival offers them more than just a glimpse into our markets; it provides a hands-on experience, allowing tourists to witness firsthand how Nepali markets operate.

One of the exceptional successes of the festival has been the live demonstrations. Visitors can witness the detailed process of Dhaka weaving, gaining insight into the meticulous production of Dhaka clothes. The festival also features displays of Mithila art, face painting, and knitting, adding both value to the products and engaging the audience in an immersive experience.

The co-founder of ABiR Designers' Hub, Rashmi Tandukar, stated, “Our main goal is to promote and give a platform to entrepreneurs, designers, artists, and artisans, and show that those staying in Nepal can produce great quality materials." She believes in the potential of Nepali handmade materials and wishes to extend a hand to any entrepreneurs in Nepal to give them a platform and bring awareness regarding the value of Nepali materials, amidst the masses being influenced by Indian and western culture, fashion styles, and materials.

She also mentioned, "A singular standalone program is not enough; it must be repeated to reiterate that Nepali products are also high-quality and not just something to buy for the sake of authenticity only." She wishes for Nepali products to rise above the status of being “pity-bought” for the sake of being Nepali and to be recognized and respected for their quality.

She acknowledges that challenges exist for entrepreneurs in the industry. Mainly, the market is small and the products lie in a niche category, which provides a small customer base to depend on. The Covid-19 pandemic also negatively affected the business, but they have persevered and will continue to be a voice for cultural, traditional, ethnic, and authentic Nepali businesses to make their mark.

In just four years, ABiR Designers' Hub has become a stronghold for Nepali textiles and accessories. Despite launching just seven months before the COVID-19 pandemic, ABiR swiftly adapted by creating a platform to promote local products. Their first outlet in Bakhundole showcased artisanal creations, affirming their commitment to tradition.

In 2022, the Spring Artisan Fest opened with a grand launch, featuring 18 vendors, followed by the Winter Fest, showcasing Nepali products during the holiday season. Their third event, held in September 2022 at the prestigious Patan Museum, attracted tourists to experience Nepal's culture and craftsmanship firsthand. Now, ABiR celebrates its fourth event, standing as a symbol of Nepali excellence in a niche market.

This event is now planned to be done biannually, culminating in an exhibition in the winter. The grand plan of ABiR is to open a huge scale outlet that will showcase not only ABiR products but also products from any artisans seeking a stage. Their major goal is to showcase, promote, and place orders for such artisans.

So, don't miss the chance to witness the finest Nepali textiles, accessories, and craftsmanship at ABiR Artisans’ Fest 2023. Visit this remarkable event and be part of ABiR’s celebration of tradition, culture, and excellence.
