NMA and ESA honor 35 female climbers

KATHMANDU, March 09: 35 female climbers of Mount Everest have been honoured.

On the occasion of International Women's Day on Wednesday, the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA )and the Everest summiteers Association (ESA) honored female climbers.

Nima Nuru Sherpa, President of the NMA, congratulated the climbers and stated that women's participation in the tourism sector should be increased.

Pasang Lhamu Sherpa successfully climbed Mt. Everest in 1993.

Climbing has also become a goal and aspiration for the younger generation. Pasang's success has become not only a guide for Nepali women, but also a watershed moment in Nepali history.

Women's participation in mountain climbing has increased since the 1990s, according to Sherpa, the association's president. "In the past, guides and porters were all men in mountaineering," he said, 'Now women's participation has increased everywhere. It should be raised.'

There are currently over 1,800 peaks in the country. According to him, only 400 peaks have been opened. The NMA is promoting 27 of these peaks. He complains that, despite the government's claims that the country is rich in natural resources, it has failed to promote these peaks.

Some mountains, he claims, have been opened for climbing, but they have become overshadowed due to a lack of promotion. He asked the government to find new tourist destinations while promoting such mountains.

All peaks should be promoted by the government. "If the government is unable to do it, it should be entrusted to the mountain climbing association," he said during his speech at the program, "and we will manage it."

The NMA's chief adviser, Ang Tshering Sherpa, has asked the government to open new peaks. Nepal currently has 1,793 peaks open, according to him. However, 1 000 389 peaks have yet to be opened. He stated that there are 28 peaks in the east on the border of Nepal and India that must be opened.

Nilhari Bastola, president of the Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN), expressed delight at the increase in female mountain climbing and trekking participation. He believes the government should encourage more female participation.

"According to World Tourism Organization records, 53 percent of women are employed in the tourism sector in Nepal," he said, adding, "The state should further encourage women in this sector."

Sushila Sirpali Thakuri, Minister of State for Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, stated that she has set a strong example in society that women can contribute boldly in any field. He stated that this type of program will not only celebrate the formality of the day, but will also aid in the discovery of women's adventurous abilities and talents.

She stated that, despite how women are perceived in society, women have risen and set a record by standing on the summit of Mount Everest.

'Rising from this society and reaching the mountains is a big challenge for women,' said State Minister Thakuri, 'but you've done it. I wish you the best of luck in the future.'

Thakuri, Minister of State for Tourism, also stated that the government is always willing to provide support and assistance for mountain climbing.

Through the Minister of State, Maya Sherpa, President of the ESA, demanded that approximately half of the climbers' association be represented in the government's quota of liaison officers assigned to mountain climbing. He claims that the association is now only represented by five contact officers.
