Laxmi puja being observed today

Laxmi puja being observed today

KATHMANDU, Oct 24: Laxmi puja and Gai tihar are 2 parts of the same coin. They are usually both celebrated on the third day of tihar on Kartik Krishna paksha Aushi. Yet this year, the tithi(lunar calendar) has a very rare occurrence. On October 24th, 2022, both Kukur tihar and Laxmi puja are being observed. While Gai tihar is being celebrated tomorrow on October 25th, with Gobardhan puja and Bhai Tika on the following days. This has caused a rift to form in celebration of the festivities with the newari community which must celebrate Mha puja tomorrow and Kija puja (Bhai Tika) on the other day.

In the Ramayana, people lit candles and diyo to guide Ram and Sita back to the kingdom. This day is the real reason behind the tradition of cleaning and decorating the house with lights and diyos. The Goddess of wealth Laxmi is also invited into our homes on this day by painting a path made by Red soil. It is said that the more Goddess Laxmi enjoys the decoration, the more wealth will be bestowed upon the house.

People buy jewelry and new utensils on this day and use them to worship Goddess Lakshmi at night. Any safes in the house are also drawn with Swastikas as a wish for economic stability and growth. This is also the day for the beginning of Deusi and Bhailo where children go around their neighborhood singing Tihar songs. They are offered money, sweets, fruits, etc.
