Som Sapkota appointed Global Coordinator to Promote Lumbini and Buddha’s Legacy
KATHMANDU, Jan 13:In a heartfelt effort to bring global attention to Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, and the surrounding Buddha Circuit, four municipalities—Lumbini Cultural Municipality, Devdaha Municipality, Kapilvastu Municipality, and Ramgram Municipality—have come together to appoint Som Nath Sapkota as International Coordinator. This initiative aims not only to celebrate Nepal’s rich spiritual heritage but also to share the universal message of Buddha’s teachings—peace, compassion, and harmony—with a world that increasingly needs it.
Lumbini is much more than a UNESCO World Heritage Site; it is a sanctuary of peace and a place of deep spiritual significance. It was here that Prince Siddhartha was born, a moment that marked the beginning of a journey that would profoundly shape the course of human history. Beyond Lumbini lies the greater Buddha Circuit, a network of sacred sites that tell the story of Buddha’s life. Kapilvastu, where he spent his early years; Devdaha, his maternal home; and Ramgram, which holds one of his sacred relics, together form a pilgrimage of immense cultural, historical, and spiritual depth.
For Som Nath Sapkota, this appointment is a deeply personal mission. A lifelong advocate for Nepal’s tourism and cultural heritage, Sapkota is passionate about preserving and promoting his country’s unique legacy. Currently serving as Deputy General Secretary of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) International Coordination Council, he also leads its Nepal Tourism Promotion Committee, tirelessly working to position Nepal as a premier destination for adventure, history, and spirituality. His experience includes working with Nepal’s Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, serving as Tourism Promoter for Wales, and being honored as a Goodwill Ambassador in 2022. His contributions as a representative of the Nepal Tourism Board in Denmark and Malta reflect his commitment to putting Nepal on the global tourism map.
“This is more than a professional role for me—it’s a calling,” Sapkota shared. “Lumbini isn’t just a place; it’s a beacon of peace and enlightenment for the world. By sharing its story, we are spreading a message of hope, compassion, and unity.”
The mayors of the four municipalities are equally invested in this collaborative vision. Sajaruddin Muslim, Mayor of Lumbini Cultural Municipality, described this appointment as a crucial step toward honoring Lumbini’s legacy. “With Mr. Sapkota’s expertise and passion, we are confident that Lumbini will shine brighter on the global stage.” Dhruba Prasad Kharel, Mayor of Devdaha Municipality, added, “Devdaha holds a unique connection to Buddha’s maternal lineage. This initiative will finally give it the recognition it deserves.” Dhanpat Yadav, Mayor of Ramgram Municipality, emphasized the spiritual significance of Buddha’s sacred relics housed in Ramgram, saying, “Mr. Sapkota’s leadership will ensure pilgrims from around the world can experience its profound importance.” Sudip Paudel, Mayor of Kapilvastu Municipality, highlighted the historical value of Kapilvastu, noting, “Kapilvastu, where Buddha spent his formative years, deserves a place of honor in the global narrative.”
Sapkota’s vision for this initiative goes far beyond tourism. It’s about creating a deeper connection between people and Buddha’s teachings, fostering compassion, and inspiring unity. To achieve this, the action plan is both ambitious and innovative. Events like Buddha Jayanti and Vesak Day will bring international attention, while creative storytelling through documentaries, virtual tours, and social media campaigns will introduce Lumbini’s story to a global audience. Iconic gestures, like installing Buddha statues in Nepali embassies around the world, will serve as enduring reminders of Nepal’s spiritual heritage.
Digital engagement will also play a vital role. Campaigns using hashtags like #DiscoverLumbini and #BuddhaInNepal will connect with younger generations and make Lumbini’s message accessible to people everywhere. Virtual events, live-streamed celebrations, and interactive online content will ensure that Lumbini’s story resonates far beyond its borders.
On the ground, infrastructure improvements are already in motion. Enhanced transportation, accommodations, and visitor facilities are being developed to make the Buddha Circuit welcoming and comfortable for travelers. Collaborations with airlines and travel agencies will make it easier and more affordable for pilgrims and tourists to visit, ensuring that their journey is both meaningful and seamless.
For Sapkota, the heart of this mission lies in the values that Buddha himself taught: peace, compassion, and non-violence. Reflecting on the initiative, he said, “This is about more than attracting visitors—it’s about inspiring people. Lumbini’s message transcends borders and cultures; it reminds us that we are all connected.”
With his leadership and the collective efforts of the municipalities, Nepal i
