Today is Janai Purnima, also known as the 'Rishi Tarpani' festival, which is observed across the country. The event is predominantly observed by Hindus throughout the country.

On Janai Purnima, the tagadharis, or those who wear the 'Janai' (the holy thread) across their bodies from the left shoulder to the right, change the sacred thread after a haircut and bath.

According to custom, Hindus get the 'Raksha Bandhan' thread, which is tied around the wrist as an amulet.

Theologians argue that Brahmin priests purify the yellow thread by chanting mantras as a symbol of protection against fear and disease.

The Newar community also celebrates this date as 'Kwati Purnima'. Kwati, a soup made from nine different beans, is a modern Nepali delicacy.

In the Terai region, sisters tie an elegant 'Rakhi' around their brothers' wrists, wishing them long life and fortune.

Today, throngs of devotees worship Lord Shiva in Pashupatinath in Kathmandu and other Shiva temples throughout the country, taking holy dips in ponds, lakes, and rivers.
