KATHMANDU, Dec 19:A study revealed 154 stone spouts (Dhungedhara) within the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC).

According to the Allan Foundation report, water is still gushing from 61 stone spouts (40 percent).

Similarly, 50 (32%) stone spouts do not receive water, and 10 (6%) stone spouts are threatened with extinction.

There have been reports of 21 (14%) stone spouts disappearing and 12 (8%) stone spouts not being discovered.

During the study, stone spouts were classified into these five groups, and data was gathered. 121 Dhara have been physically discovered, according to information received. While 33 stone spouts are missing.

Wards 15 and 32 each have 12 stone spouts, according to the distribution. Wards 11, 22, 23, 24, 25, and 27, on the other hand, do not have any stone spouts. Other wards have various numbers, with one each in wards 12 and 13, two in wards 3, 21, and 29, and three in wards 2 and 30.

Similarly, there are four stone spouts in each of Wards 5, 28, and 31, five in Ward 20, six in Wards 1, 8, 19, 26, and seven in Ward 18. Further distribution includes eight spouts in Wards 4 and 7, nine in Wards 9 and 16, ten in Ward 17, eleven in Ward 6, and thirteen in Ward 10.

In Kathmandu, stone spouts were made operational by constructing a network of palaces, ponds, and water canals. However, as urbanization has increased, the sources of the stone spouts have grown stagnant.
