UN Secretary-General Guterres pledge to raise global attention of Nepal's climate challenges

KATHMANDU, Oct 31:United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has stated his commitment to raise global awareness to the effects of climate change on Nepal's mountainous regions.

On Monday morning, he spoke with the local community of Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality-4 about climate change and its impact on their lives.

On that occasion, Secretary General Guterres stated that the Climate Change Conference (COP-28)  will focus on the impact of climate change on mountains through local suggestions. He stated that wealthier countries contribute to global pollution, however it is unfortunate that rural locations like as Khumbu Pasanglhamu Rural Municipality are badly impacted.

Secretary-General Guterres has stated his commitment to do all possible to mitigate the effects of climate change and to spread this message around the world.

The local community briefed Secretary General Guterres about the increasing melting of glaciers, increased climatic damages, drying up of water sources, the impact of climate on local crops, and the growing problem of landslides in the Nanga Himal during the meeting. The locals stated that there is a dearth of energy in the community and requested assistance in the development of small hydropower  projects.

On this mission, Secretary-General Guterres is accompanied by UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Jean-Pierre Lacroix, UN Resident Coordinator for Nepal Hana Singer-Hamdi, and other UN officials.
