Self-declaration booth to be brought into operation at TIA for returning migrants

KATHMANDU, August 13: The Tribhuvan Airport Customs Office is set to bring a self-declaration booth for passengers coming from abroad.
Earlier, passengers returning from abroad who brought gold, jewelry, foreign currency televisions, and mobile phones more than the set amount were alleged in customs evasion when they exited without self-declaration.
The customs department has informed us that after the self-declaration booth comes into operation, passengers will be able to self-declare the goods they have and pay customs duty for excess goods.
According to the department, it has been arranged that after passing through the immigration hall, passengers from abroad will get the facility of self-declaration before reaching the customs X-ray machine.
Female travelers returning to Nepal from abroad do not have to pay customs on gold jewelry up to a maximum of 50 grams and male passengers up to a maximum of 25 grams.
In addition, there is a provision that a person can bring up to 200 grams of gold jewelry in the case of women and 25 grams in the case of men after paying duty at the customs point.
There is a provision that Nepali travelers who are listed in the social security fund and return after working for 12 consecutive months after obtaining a work permit do not have to pay customs if they bring any size or type of television with them. However, Nepali travelers who are not listed in the Social Security Fund and have returned after working for 12 consecutive months with a work permit, are allowed to bring only televisions up to 32 inches without paying customs duty.
In other cases, there is a provision to pay customs duty on all televisions.
Likewise, passengers with foreign currency worth more than 5,000 US dollars must declare the carrying amount at the airport.
