US Embassy marks the 60th anniversary of first American to summit Mount Everest

KATHMANDU, May 02:The American Embassy in Nepal has memory Jim Whittaker, the first American citizen to climb Mount Everest, with various programs.

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the first American climber to reach the summit of Mount Everest, Ambassador Thompson took part in various programs organized by the American Embassy in Khumbu, Namche, and other areas, and spoke with the Sherpa community, public representatives, business leaders, and locals.

Ambassador Thompson met with local communities, business leaders, and trekking operators to address the effects of climate change on communities and enterprises. Furthermore, he stated that the United States is interested in this matter and will support the Nepalese government's efforts.

Jim Whittaker became the first American to climb Mount Everest sixty years ago today. 'I am visiting Khumbu today and will meet with the local community, businesspeople, the US-Nepal Friendship Mission team, and the young,' Ambassador Thompson stated at a special event. The Pasang Lamu Mountaineering Foundation's documentary "Pasang: In the Shadow of Everest" about the first Nepali woman to climb Mount Everest was also shown to the local community.

During the event, two members of the Nepal Climbing Expedition team presented the Ambassador with a flag of friendship. At the same time, the ambassador met with adventure tourism business operators to examine the tourist situation in Khumbu.

Mingma Chiri Sherpa, head of the Khumbu Pasanglhamu rural municipality, and other people, leaders and residents greeted the ambassador in Namche.
