Devotees flock to Matatirtha Kunda to mark Matatirtha Aunsi

KATHMANDU, April 21:Devotees have flocked to the Matatirtha Kunda (pond) in Kathmandu's Chandragiri Municipality-6 to commemorate the Matatirtha Aunsi. They take a holy, pay tribute, and make offerings to their mothers who have passed away.

Matatirtha Aunsi, or Mother's Day, is commemorated every year in honor of mothers on the new moon day in the lunar month of Baisakh.
Devotees stay awake all night the night before in commemoration of their mothers, then take a holy bath the next day.

According to religious belief, if one imagines their mother with a devout heart and sincere devotion, they can see their deceased mother's face mirrored in the pond.

People bring sweets, clothes, and gifts to their moms in order to make them happy and to receive blessings from them. Those who have lost their mothers come to Matatirtha to offer their respects.

According to Shanta Udas, Chairperson of the Matatirtha Conservation and Development Organization, arrangements have been made for visiting devotees. Over 500,000 worshippers are anticipated to visit the pond on this occasion, he said.

Meanwhile, Chandragiri Municipality has declared today a public holiday within the municipality.
