Bisket Jatra begins in Bhaktapur

BHAKTAPUR, April 10: Bisket, the cultural and historical festival celebrated solely in Bhaktapur, formally began today.

Since the beginning of the festival, devotees have flocked to Taumadhi to pay homage to the deity Bhairav. It is said that after the Bhairav worship concludes, the Bhairav chariot procession will begin.

The Bisket festival began with the towing of the Chariot of Bhairav, followed by all of the associated customary rituals. The idols of Bhairav and Betal, as well as the sword and flag brought from Hanumandhoka in Kathmandu, are installed in the chariot.

 

The chariot is drawn in a procession from the village of Taumadhi to Gahiti.The festival is celebrated in grand style for eight nights and nine days, with rituals such as the Sindur Jatra and the tongue-piercing ceremony.

Chief District Officer Khagendra Prasad Rijal stated that all necessary preparations have been made to ensure that there are no untoward incidents during the festival and that it concludes peacefully. Superintendent of Police Prajit KC of Police Range Bhaktapur said that 700 security personnel have been mobilized for the festival.
