Calibration flight to be conducted at Pokhara International Airport on November 30

KATHMANDU, Nov 08: A mechanical test flight 'Calibration Flight' will be conducted at Pokhara Regional International Airport on November 30.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has informed that preparations are being made for calibration flights at Pokhara Airport, which has been announced for commercial operation since January 1.

Pradeep Adhikari, director general of the authority, said that a mechanical test flight will be conducted at Pokhara International Airport on November 30 and commercial flights will be operated from January 1.

"Pokhara Airport will be operational from January 1, but the number of flights will be limited for the time being", he said.

Vinesh Munakarmi, head of the airport construction project, said that the physical infrastructure and technical work of Pokhara Airport, which is a project of national pride, has been completed.

Mechanized flight from Aero Thai's plane

CAAN said that all the necessary procedures for mechanical flight have been completed. For that, a plane with a technical team of Aero Thai will come to Nepal on the 25th.

The plane will check the functioning of communication, navigation and surveillance equipment at the airport through mechanical flight.

Jagannath Niraula, spokesperson of CAAN, said that Aero Thai's aircraft will fly mechanically at Pokhara Airport for a week. According to him, the aircraft of the company will also fly mechanically to other airports in the country.

The same company conducted a mechanical test flight on February 18 last year at Gautam Buddha International Airport located in Bhairahawa, Rupandehi, which is the second international airport in the country. A special aircraft with Aero Thai technicians conducted a test flight for 10 days.

CAAN has a plan to operate the airport so that flights are bird-friendly after a short research by ornithologists.

The director general officer said that there is a plan to operate the domestic airport during the day and the international airport at night.

"A decision will be made to operate after evening or to operate in a suitable environment after conducting an 'assessment audit' by experts about the 'dumping site' and bird habitat near the airport. The airport will be flown in the season when the activity of birds is less, he said.

The government's goal is to promote the tourism industry by building Pokhara Regional International Airport.

It is believed that the airport will play an important role in promoting tourism and increasing economic activity in Pokhara, an important tourist destination of the country.

With the operation of the airport, Pokhara will be directly connected to the international communication network.

According to CAAN, the construction of this airport, spread over an area of about 3,900 ropani, will cost about 22 billion.

Currently, the airport has a runway of 2,500 meters and a width of 45 meters and the thickness of the runway is 34 centimeters.

An ATC tower, seven buildings, and a hangar have also been constructed. Although the target of completion in June 2021 was taken, the completion of the construction was delayed for some time due to the covid-19 pandemic.

The entire construction work of Pokhara International Airport has been completed and the airport was built by CAMC, a Chinese state-owned contractor.

According to the standards of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), it is said that flights of Boeing 757 and Airbus 320 or similar aircraft will land at Pokhara Airport, which falls under the '4D model'.

The airport will be able to serve eight million passengers annually. The airport can park 11 planes consisting of three narrow bodies, four ATRs and four twin-otter.
